Why Suppressing Symptoms Often Backfires..

Our current medical model is set up to suppress (medication) or cut out problems, but what does this actually do to your body?
When I was 10, I had my tonsils removed. At their peak, tonsillectomies were performed 1.4 million times a year in the US. Today, there are still 500,000 tonsil removals performed annually in the US. That’s a staggering number considering the tonsils are an important part of the immune system. In fact, removing tonsils doesn’t remove the underlying issue; it just removes the way the body expresses the symptoms.
If someone is struggling with chronic symptoms reflected in the tonsils its the body’s indication that a more pressing immune system problem is at play. In my case, I went on to have undiagnosed celiac disease and milk allergies. It wasn’t until I saw an Alternative Medicine Practitioner who practiced muscle testing that I understood removing dairy and wheat from my diet was essential. It was 20 years later before I received a confirmation of celiac disease and removed gluten completely.
In 25 years of seeing clients clinically - both virtually and in-person - I’ve had numerous parents come in with kids who had chronic swollen tonsils. Every single time we were able to identify food allergens, immune system dysfunction, or toxic overload, i.e., chemical, heavy metal, or medication toxicity, and avoid the tonsils being removed.
Tonsillectomies are just one example of how our current medical model addresses the symptoms and not the root cause. Whether it's medication or surgery, the majority of methods are designed to alleviate symptoms. When we remove a symptom, but the energy, emotion, and environment that fostered the problem continue to exist, the problem just manifests somewhere else in the body. It did with me, and I often wonder how my health would have differed had I been properly diagnosed as a child instead of just put under the knife and sent on to do the same things that got me to that place of illness in the first place.
My gratitude for the journey is that I wouldn’t have been able to serve the tens of thousands of clients and students I have over the decades. My health journey created passion and promise to deliver science and spirituality in an understandable and usable form.
If you’re finding yourself experiencing chronic physical or psychoological health issues, know there are the right solutions for you out there. Don’t stop what you’ve been told to do without the right medical supervision, but also know that you can start to implement healthier changes - herbs, essential oils, whole food nutrition, emotional work, and environmental changes - that long-term will help your body feel supported and heal.
Covering up symptoms has long-lasting negative impacts on overall health, but addressing the root cause opens the door to possibilities. Deeper sleep, more energy, and a better quality of life.
I’m a living testament that this path works. As I went for a run this morning, I felt so much gratitude in my heart and body that as I approach my 47th birthday, I feel stronger, clearer, and healthier than I ever have before!
